Behind the Build with Touch Mechanics: From Bowling Lanes to the Pool Table

When it comes to bringing real-world sports to life on mobile, Touch Mechanics has built a reputation for crafting games that are fast, precise, and deeply satisfying. Established in 2004 by two brothers passionate about intuitive control systems, the studio is shaped by over 35 years of shared love for video games. Their titles, like Strike! by Bowlero, emphasize natural-feeling controls and high-skill moments that translate real-world reflexes into competitive gameplay.

Starting with PC shareware and moving through the Nintendo DS to mobile games, Touch Mechanics has stayed focused on what matters most: gameplay that just feels right. As one of the earliest developers on the Skillz platform, they continue to channel decades of experience into every project.

In this edition of Behind the Build, we spoke with Grant Crossley, co-founder of Touch Mechanics, about their evolution as developers, how they engineer big in-game moments, and why Speed Pool represents some of their sharpest design work yet.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the games you’ve developed with Skillz technology?

We have been developing games since 2004. We started with PC shareware before moving on to the Nintendo DS, then moved into the mobile phone market. We took our game Strike! by Bowlero and added Skillz technology to it in 2014. We were really early adopters of the Skillz platform.

What is your personal favorite game that you’ve built, and why?

It used to be Strike! by Bowlero, but now we think our best work is Speed Pool for Skillz on mobile and web.

The control system is so intuitive that it lets players play the game with speed and accuracy. It also has the best tutorial we have ever done, and players can learn all the controls in less than a minute.

We want players to start playing quickly!

How did you create “a big moment” in your games, and why is that important?

Because we have made sports games like Bulls i Darts: Masters Edition, Strike! by Bowlero, and Speed Pool, these big moments are already built into the games by default.

  • Darts: a massive score to keep the game alive.
  • Bowling: hitting three strikes in the final frame.
  • Pool: a double-in shot or tricky long pot.
What do you appreciate most about working with Skillz?

Skillz has been our best-ever partner, friendly, supportive, and offering a fair revenue-sharing model.

What other Skillz games do you play?

Brick Blaster Cash is good for a quick play.
