Our VP of Engineering, Miriam Aguirre, is a known champion of increasing diversity in tech and empowering women to disrupt traditionally male-dominated industries like gaming and eSports. Last week, Miriam had the opportunity to speak about such causes at this year’s Wonder Women Tech conference in Long Beach, California.

Wonder Women Tech is an organization that produces year-round programs and conferences aimed at highlighting, educating, and celebrating diversity in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math).

As a speaker on a panel entitled “The Women Pioneering the Tech Space,” Miriam joined female software engineers from Pivotal Labs and Docker Inc. alongside a moderator from Yahoo! in a discussion of common challenges for women in tech, advice for girls aspiring to enter the tech space, biggest learnings from their tech careers, and more.

“The conference was very positive and extremely diverse. It included folks from big companies like GE to small, 1-2 person startups,” recalls Miriam. “I really enjoyed that they gave equal stage time to everyone, regardless of the size of their company or their years of experience, and that they included women from the arts, which is an often overlooked industry when it comes to the underrepresentation of women.”

Thanks, Miriam, for always working to ensure equal treatment and opportunities for women! To learn more about Miriam and her work in advancing diversity in tech, check out her Skillz Employee Spotlight blog post.
