Week in Review: Mobile Game Revenue Growing 66% by 2020, New VR eSports Tournament, App Store Record Revenue and Downloads in Q1

Digital/Mobile News

  • Mobile game revenue will grow 66% from $38 billion in 2016 to $65 billion in 2020, according to Newzoo. Most of this growth will come from Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Africa. The more mature markets of North America and Europe will continue to grow at a lower but stable rate. By comparison, the overall total for global app store revenues will grow from $46.2 billion in 2016 to $85 billion by 2020. (VentureBeat)
  • App stores saw record revenue and downloads in Q1 2017, according to a new report from App Annie. Across both iOS and Android, downloads grew by 15 percent year-over-year to reach nearly 25 billion worldwide. In addition, consumer spending on apps grew 45 percent year-over-year in Q1, to reach over $15 billion across iOS and Android worldwide.   • Team Liquid has renewed its exclusive broadcasting partnership with Twitch. The deal continues a partnership that initiated in 2011, prior to Team Liquid’s merger with Team Curse, which had partnerships with Azubu and Twitch before it integrated its teams into the Liquid brand in late 2014. The parties have not disclosed financial details and length of contract. (ESPN)
